Daniel Idema topped a field of 376 players in the 2015 World Series of Poker $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event to win his third WSOP gold bracelet, making him only the 73rd person to win that many titles or more at the series. In addition to joining that illustrious list Idema also earned the $261,774 first-place prize and 900 Card Player Player of the Year points.
Idema’s prior wins came in limit hold’em and seven card stud eight-or-better, so it only seemed fitting that his next win would come in a format like H.O.R.S.E. that rewards well rounded players.
“I really like this format of mixed limit games,” Idema said. “You don’t see that many
players play all the games well, so I think this is suited to someone who has tried to
develop in all of them, as I have.”
Idema overcame a tough final table with several accomplished opponents, including bracelet winners Taylor Paur and Randy Ohel, 2010 WSOP main event runner up John Racener and six-time final tablist at the series Matthew Vengrin.
In the end it came down to a final showdown between Idema and Vengrin, with the latter beginning with a slight chip advantage at the beginning of heads-up play. Idema was able to quickly turn that around, and by the time the final hand arose he held a sizable chip lead.
Seven card stud was the game and Idema brought it in showing the 9. Vengrin completed with the Q only to have Idema raise. Vengrin made the call and caught the 9 while Idema received the Q.
Idema made the 100,000 bet on fourth street and Vengrin called. Idema picked up the J on fifth and Vengrin was dealt the 5. Idema bet again and Vengrin raised, putting himself all in. Idema called and the two revealed their hands and continued to run out the two boards, which looked as follows:
Idema – (66)9QJJ(3)
Vengrin – (KQ)Q957(A)
Idema made two pair on sixth street and Vengrin’s split queens failed to improve, securing the pot and the title for Idema and sending Vengrin to the rail as the runner up with $161,680 for his deep run.
