Six-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu has garnered a lot of mainstream media attention over his poker career, and now the Canadian is part of a brand-new PETA advertisement that is trying to get people to “pledge to go vegan.”
As of late Wednesday, the pledge had nearly 75 percent of the 10,000 signatures it was seeking. Negreanu is a well-known vegan, and he often writes about his nutrition in his blog and on other social media accounts.
Negreanu said he became a vegan nine years ago, after realizing that fellow poker players “eat piles of crap around the table, like mounds of dead animals every hour.”
“My diet’s now as good as it’s ever been, and although my veganism started out absolutely about health, it’s also become about the environment and animal cruelty,” Negreanu said in a statement.
“The way animals are treated and the conditions are atrocious. They’re force fed steroids, the chickens are de-beaked. You end up eating sick, diseased chickens because they’re living in shit. It’s like a holocaust on animals.”
According to PETA, other celebrities who are taking part in a larger push for healthier eating include Woody Harrelson, Joaquin Phoenix, Richard Linklater, Peter Dinklage and Paul McCartney.
Negreanu recently finished 11th in the WSOP main event. He also has lately been getting some mainstream media love thanks to his vocal support of Las Vegas getting an NHL team. Negreanu thinks it’s a sure bet and is even looking to own a piece of the team.
