Could this be the year for Georgia to approve Las Vegas-style casino-resorts?
A bill that would allow for voters to decide in November is still on the table, and there could be momentum building as the legislative session ends next month and many are pushing the issue as a way to generate tax revenue.
According to a report from WXIA, the casino bill’s chances depend on a horse racing bill that could be voted on as early as next week.
The casino legislation calls for local governments to have the option of asking their voters whether to allow a casino in their area. The state would be divided into five zones in order to spread the casinos out.
According to a report from AJC.com, a new poll found that 84 percent of Georgia voters think they should be able to decide on the issue come November. Even the vast majority who oppose casinos think voters should decide rather than the legislature.
Before going on the ballot, the proposal, which could allow up to six casinos, first must achieve a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate.
Last year, MGM Resorts International pitched a $1 billion casino complex in Atlanta, the minimum investment that would be required. The casino giant also hired lobbyists to push the issue.
