A Native American tribe with land within the state of Massachusetts is set to break ground on its new casino this week.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is planning the ceremony for Tuesday, with the first phase of the casino scheduled to open in the summer of 2017, according to Indian Country Today Media Network. The casino will likely be the first of its kind to open in the Bay State, as casinos from Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts International in other areas of the state have experienced delays.
The tribe’s casino in Taunton will have roughly 3,000 slot machines, 150 gaming tables and a 40-table poker room. The entire resort will be complete by 2022.
Taunton is about 40 miles south of Boston. Wynn’s casino would sit just outside the city.
The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs officially designated Mashpee Wampanoag lands as a reservation in January, which helped clear the way for the $500 million casino, to be called First Light Casino. Genting Group will operate the casino for the tribe.
Under the terms of a compact with the state, Massachusetts will receive 17 percent of gaming win if the tribe’s casino is the only one of its kind in the southeast region of the state.
