An ongoing illegal gambling investigation in Rhode Island has resulted in the arrests of 17 individuals, including a pair of baseball players.
The Rhode Island State Police announced the charges Tuesday, which include bookmaking, organized criminal gambling and drug offenses. The arrests were the result of an eight-month investigation, police said.
The two baseball players arrested are Chris Costantino, who was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2009, and Sean Furney, who was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013. Both are Rhode Islanders.
One of the 17 men is a known mob associate, according to the Associated Press.
According to the American Gaming Association, the illegal sports betting market in the United States grew to $148.8 billion in 2015. The sheer size of the illicit market has prompted the AGA to push for federal sports betting legislation in order to reform the law.
AGA CEO Geoff Freeman said last week that “the next president is going to have that issue of legalizing sports betting on their desk, and I’m confident they’ll make the right decision.”
