The National Hockey League has chosen Las Vegas for an expansion team that will come no earlier than the 2017-18 season, according to media reports.
The league said that backers of the Las Vegas team will first need to come up with $500 million to pay as a fee. The NHL’s board of governors also still needs to finalize the plan at its June 22 meeting, ESPN reported.
It’s been 16 years since the league last expanded. The Las Vegas hockey team could play at MGM’s new T-Mobile Arena on the Strip. The fact that there’s an arena already there to host the games helped the effort move forward. The Oakland Raiders and the NFL are considering Las Vegas, and there’s been talk of a $1.4 billion stadium from Las Vegas Sands Corp.
Last year, poker pro Daniel Negreanu, a diehard hockey fan, was extremely optimistic about the NHL in Las Vegas, saying at the time: “I just don’t see it not happening. We have a solid owner, an arena and we sold 13,000 season tickets. Vegas has 2.2 million people. It’s a sports town. We’ve been starving for a professional franchise of any kind for many years.”
A name for the team hasn’t yet been selected.
