The state of New Jersey and the United Kingdom have reached a tentative agreement to share their respective online gambling player pools, according to report from Global Gaming Business.

The UK is one of the oldest regulated online casino markets in the world. New Jersey has more than 90 percent of the regulated online gambling market in America.

David Rebuck, the Director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, was quoted as saying: “We’d still have to figure out lots of issues: specific regulations, how the tax rate from each jurisdiction would be applied, player ID and geolocation issues, and other things we probably haven’t even considered yet. But you have to start somewhere.”

Under New Jersey law, only those physically located within the state can have access to state-approved online gaming sites, but the law does allow the state to enter into a liquidity sharing compact with another jurisdiction. New Jersey legalized online gambling in 2013.

It’s unclear if New Jersey residents would ever be able to play on sites licensed by the UK that aren’t in New Jersey. The UK does online sports betting, while New Jersey does not. However, the most important thing would be the UK’s gambling population playing peer-to-peer poker with New Jersey players. Several online poker platforms do business in both jurisdictions.

According to the report, New Jersey gaming regulators sent letters last week to the companies who do business in both jurisdictions to begin figuring out how such a system would work.

The UK represented around 10 percent of the entire European online casino market as of a few years ago, according to research from Deloitte. Growth for online casinos there has been more than 10 percent annually. The number of online gamblers in the UK was estimated at more than two million. The entire population of New Jersey is roughly nine million.

Thru the first five months of 2016, New Jersey online casino revenue was $78.4 million, an increase of 30 percent compared to the same period last year.

The other states in America with regulated online casino gambling are Nevada and Delaware, and the two of them share liquidity for online poker. Nevada is poker-only right now, but the Silver State is considering a move to allow other casino games on the Internet.

Pennsylvania, California and New York are all considering online casino gaming.
