Another week is in the books for the 2016 Card Player Player of the Year race. Here is a look at the events that made the largest impact on the POY standings over the past seven days.
Aria High Rollers
Two $25,000 no-limit hold’em high roller events took place last week at the Aria Poker Room in Las Vegas. Although there were two tournaments there was only one champion: Byron Kaverman. He took down both tournaments to win over half of a million dollars combined.
The first tournament drew a field of 27 entries to create a prize pool of $648,000. In that event Kaverman made a chop deal that saw him lock up the title and the top payout of $226,227. Kaverman also scored 420 Player of the year points for the win.
Andrew Lichtenberger, who won his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet this summer, finished runner-up for $187,557 and 350 points. This was his fifth final table finish of the year and it was enough to move him into 23rd place in the overall POY rankings with 2,500 points and $1,047,243 in year-to-date earnings.
The very next day the second $25,000 high roller event was held, attracting 23 entries to build a $552,000 prize pool. The lion’s share of that went to Kaverman again he came out on top to secure his second title in as many days, the top prize of $276,000 and another 420 POY points.
Kaverman now has four final table finishes in 2016. With $855,754 in year-to-date earnings and 1,540 total points he currently sits in 86th place in the POY standings.
Jake Schindler place third in both events, cashing for a combined $265,176. His two big scores also earned him 560 POY points. With $1,028,586 in earnings in 2016, six final tables and 1,753 points he now sits in 68th place on the leader board.
Incredibly all six of Schindler’s POY-qualified final table finishes this year have come in high roller events at Aria, including his lone title of the year which came back in April. He topped a field of 22 entries in that tournament to win $264,000.
