Harman to Hold Charity Tournament for the AnimalsTournament to Benefit Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Takes Place Friday |

The 300-plus cats at the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals lie around on couches and cat perches and mingle with each like tiny Southern belles and beaus, but this is only their temporary home. Right now, they are in a holding pattern, waiting for someone to take them home and welcome them into their families. The dogs, much noisier and excitable, are in the back, living in clean cages with access to an outside courtyard, pining for attention.
They have no idea that Jennifer Harman loves them so much that this Friday she's holding a poker tournament at Caesars Las Vegas that will feature the game's biggest stars and animal lovers.
The Jennifer Harman Charity Poker Tournament starts at noon Friday. Interested players need to preregister through Nevada's SPCA website at nevadaspca.org. There is a possibility that the tournament will be sold out. The deadline to register is11:59 p.m. Thursday.
This is a rebuy event ($200 with a $200 add-on) and the winner receives a $10,000 seat to this summer's World Series of Poker. The rest of the prize pool goes to the animal shelter.
Here's a partial list of the confirmed poker stars who will play: JC Tran, Nam Le, Rene Angelil, Jean-Robert Belland, David Benjamine, Brad Booth, Alan Boston, Todd Brunson, Brandon Cantu, Hoyt Corkins, Paul Darden, Eli Elezra, Antonio Esfandiari, Sam Farha, Chau Giang, Clonie Gowan, Barry Greenstein, Brandy Rose Hawbaker, Chip and Karina Jett, Connie Kim, Jennifer Leigh, Liz Lieu, Erik Lindgren, Marcel Luske, Minh Ly, Mike Matusow, Carlos Mortensen, Chris McCormack, Evelyn Ng, Ralph Perry, Carmel Petresco, Josh Arieh, David "Chip" Reese, Joe Reitman, Erica Schoenberg, and Marco Traniello.
Celebrity guests include Jennifer Tilly, local comedian Carrot Top, Olympic snowboard medalists and representatives Ross Powers, Keir Dillon, Jeff Brushie, and David Driscoll, and Vince Neil of Motley Crew.
The list is so packed with star power for two reasons: Harman is one of the most popular and well-liked players out there, and the starting day for the $25,000 World Poker Tour Championship starts Saturday.
Harman brought her friends Todd Brunson and Daniel Negreanu with her to Nevada's SPCA last Thursday to promote her event. Brunson was in tow with a dog that they split custody with, and Brunson presented a check to the NSPCA that was for the first three buy-ins to the event.
Harman said she always loved animals and said it always bothered her when she saw an animal suffering. There's been many times in her life, she said, that she's had a stray dog or cat sharing her place. She said the NSPCA - which is a no-kill shelter - does a fantastic job caring for unwanted animals, and the volunteers and the animals there deserve the funding and recognition.
The NSPCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the care of animals in need. It promotes humane education, makes referrals for low-cost spay and neuter procedures and vaccinations, and serves as an advocate by encouraging people to be the best possible caregivers.
The shelter has the philosophy that it will care for any animal that is healthy, friendly, or has the potential to get well. At all times, it has more than 150 dogs, 325 cats, and 105 exotic animals that include pot-bellied pigs and ferrets.
Please call the NSPCA at 702-873-7722 for more information about the organization.
