The man who spearheaded New Jersey’s online poker legalization efforts in 2013 has announced that he will be vying to replace outgoing Gov. Chris Christie.
According to NJ.com, longtime state Sen. Ray Lesniak, a Democrat, filed paperwork to run on Wednesday with the New Jersey State Election Law Enforcement Commission.
“This is an uphill battle,” said Lesniak, who in 2015 indicated he was thinking about running. “But I believe I have the support of people and the recent election has shown that you can go directly to the people and get support if you have the right message.”
He’s currently among more than a dozen candidates for governor.
In 2013, Lesniak told Card Player that he envisions New Jersey as the “Mecca of internet gaming,” meaning that the Garden State could be an international hub for the industry. Lesniak as governor would likely be great news for potential online poker liquidity sharing deals.
In July, New Jersey gaming regulators said that they have begun discussing such an arrangement with the United Kingdom. Such a compact would require the governor’s approval. Lesniak is also a supporter of sports books in Atlantic City and a casino in North Jersey. Voters rejected the latter idea in November.
