New Jersey online casinos had a record breaking December and record breaking 2016.

According to figures released Thursday from Garden State gaming regulators, revenue from internet gaming was $18.4 million last month, an increase of 31 percent year-over-year and also an all-time high for a single month. The previous record was $17.4 million.

Internet gaming win for the calendar year was $196.7 million, up 32 percent from 2015. New Jersey had more than 90 percent of the regulated online casino market in America in 2015.

Of the $196.7 million in revenue, $26.5 million came from peer-to-peer poker, an increase of 11 percent compared to 2015. PokerStars, the largest poker site in the world in terms of traffic, launched in March for those physically within New Jersey’s borders.

In July, New Jersey’s top gaming regulator said that the state has begun discussions with the United Kingdom over potentially sharing online poker players. The arrangement could expose New Jersey poker players to an additional two million online gamblers out of a country of more than 64 million.

The other casino games generated $170.2 million last year, up 36 percent from 2015.

What’s next?

New Jersey lawmakers are mulling over a new proposal that would allow two racetracks located outside of Atlantic City to offer online gambling. Under current law, online gambling operations must be based out of the seaside gambling town.

Just days ago, New Jersey Senator Ray Lesniak, who spearheaded the state’s online gambling bill in 2013, announced he’s running for governor. Lesniak told Card Player in 2013 that he wants New Jersey to be “the Mecca of internet gaming.”

While Nevada and Delaware share liquidity for online poker, New Jersey does not have such a partner. However, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has said he would like to compact with the Garden State.
