NFL Owners To Meet This Spring To Consider Plan

Raiders.comThe Oakland Raiders made the plan to move to Las Vegas official this week by filing paperwork for relocation, according to media reports.

Though it’s a significant development, the move would still need league approval. The NFL has a history of being anti-gambling, but it has shown signs of modernizing that position.

In the fall, Nevada lawmakers passed a controversial bill for a $750 million public subsidy for a planned $1.9 billion stadium. The Raiders and Sheldon Adelson have pledged to contribute the rest.

Adelson, owner of Las Vegas Sands Corp., has made comments in recent months that cast some doubt over the deal to bring the Raiders to Las Vegas.

At least 24 of the 32 NFL owners must approve the move. There’s a scheduled NFL meeting in March that could see a vote on the proposal. It’s been widely assumed that the vote has a good chance of going favorably for Raiders owner Mark Davis. Several key owners, including Jerry Jones, support a team in Las Vegas.

The city of Oakland is still trying to keep the team.

The Raiders could be playing in Las Vegas in 2019.

Should the move happen, it’s conceivable that the NFL would want Las Vegas sports books to exclude the Raiders from their offerings. The future for sports betting in America has never looked brighter, however.

The U.S. Supreme Court might decide to take up New Jersey’s sports betting case, and it could strike down the federal law that limits full-fledged sports betting to just Nevada. There’s also a plan to introduce new legislation to update sports betting law.

According to the American Gaming Association, the sports betting black market is worth about $150 billion annually, and the group has argued that regulation would work better.
