Maryland Poker Grows By 30 Percent In FebruaryFour Poker Rooms Rake $3.7 Million In Month |

Poker rooms in Maryland raked a combined $3.68 million last month, according to figures released this week by state gaming regulators.
The four rooms raked $3.9 million in January. Obviously February has fewer days, so the month-over-month comparison isn’t that useful.
February’s performance was significantly better than the result during the same month last year. In February 2016, the poker rooms raked $2.83 million. So, the state’s poker market grew by 30 percent year-over-year.
Last month, Hollywood Casino Perryville raked $95,000; Maryland Live took in $1.57 million; Horseshoe Baltimore generated $402,000; and MGM National Harbor raked $1.62 million.
The dramatic growth in the state’s poker market is credited to MGM National Harbor, which opened its doors in early December. That casino has a 39-table room.
“The market is going to grow,” MGM National Harbor Poker Room Manager Johnny Grooms told Card Player. “We felt that there was an under-served population in Southern D.C. and Northern Virginia, and in the more expansive area down to North Carolina. Our competitors to the North have done a good job, but traffic patterns here dictate where and when people go do things.”
Maryland Live raked more than $2 million in February 2016, so MGM has taken a bite out of its share of the market. Maryland Live has 52 tables.
The state’s six casinos (two of them don’t offer traditional poker) won a combined $128.7 million from all the casino games last month. That was an increase of 38 percent year-over-year compared to February 2016’s $93.3 million.
