Steve O’Dwyer has won the 2017 PokerStars Championship Panama $10,300 no-limit hold’em high roller event, defeating a field of 110 entries to earn the $240,451 first-place prize and his 19th live tournament title.
This was the 31-year-old poker pro’s 29th six-figure live tournament score, bringing his lifetime earnings to $16,382,424. He currently sits in 14th place on the all-time live tournament earnings leaderboard, just more than half of a million dollars ahead of Dan Smith in 15th place.
O’Dwyer came into the final day of this event as the chip leader with five players remaining. He took the lead on one of the final hands of the night, with his 77 winning a race against Anthony Zinno’s KJ. Joining O’Dwyer in the final five were Brazilian PokerStars Pro Felipe Ramos, American pro Chris Hunichen and Canadian World Series of Poker bracelet winner Sam Greenwood.
In the end it came down to a heads-up showdown between O’Dwyer and Greenwood, with the former beginning the two-handed battle with a 4-to-1 chip advantage.Green wood was able to mount a comeback and nearly even the chip counts. At that point the final two players decided to make a deal, with O’Dwyer locking up $231,862 and Greenwood securing $223,149. That left $8,589 and the title to play for.
From there O’Dwyer took over and never looked back. On the final hand the two got all on after a flop of 732 with O’Dwyer holding the 54 for a open-ended straight draw and Greenwood holding the Q3 for second pair. The 4 on the turn put O’Dwyer in the lead and the 10 sealed the deal. With that Greenwood was eliminated, earning $223,149 as the runner-up.
