Overnight Chip Leader Barry HutterThe $5,000 buy-in Card Player Poker Tour main event at the Venetian poker room got off to a solid start on Monday by drawing a field of 127 entries in the day 1a flight.

The $2 million guaranteed no-limit hold’em event only attracted 42 entrants on day 1a last year and still managed to get a total of 537, which means this year’s edition might do even better. Registration will remain open until 7 p.m. on day 2, and players can fire up to six bullets in this event with re-entries.

The event is part of the DeepStack Extravaganza series, which definitely lived up to its name with 75-minute levels and a generous 25,000 in starting chips. The blinds will even increase in duration to 90 minutes starting on day 2.

But the deep stacks didn’t stop the players from getting it in often and early. In fact, by the end of play, only 42 were still left to bag up for the night.

Leading the way is Barry Hutter, who enjoyed a steady climb all day long and was never really challenged atop the leaderboard. “I’ve played a few big ones,” Hutter said after the dinner break. “I keep flopping sets and scooping big pots.”

Hutter was far from done, taking a massive pot off of fellow big stack Jimmy D’Ambrosio without even seeing a showdown. He ended the night with 201,950, which is nearly three times the average.

Other notables who bagged up sizable stacks included Matt Gianetti (159,550), John Dolan (145,200), Scott Clements (131,000), Troy Quenneville (122,050), Dimitar Danchev (120,575), Barry Shulman (107,025) and Elio Fox (103,275).

Play will continue Tuesday at noon with the start of day 1b. Here’s a look at the overnight chip counts.
