Travis Dorsey has won the 2018 World Series of Poker Circuit Planet Hollywood $1,700 no-limit hold’em main event, defeating a field of 518 total entries to capture his third WSOPC gold ring and the top prize of $168,722.
In addition to the title and the money, Dorsey also was awarded 840 Card Player Player of the Year points. This was the Texas resident’s first POY-qualified final table of the year, and it alone was enough to move him into 587th place in the overall POY race standings.
Dorsey had plenty of tough competition to deal with on the road to victory. The final day of this tournament began with 12 players remaining, with plenty of accomplished players left with a shot at the title. Card Player Publisher and two-time WSOP bracelet winner Barry Shulman was the first to be eliminated when his AK could not win a preflop race against Dorsey’s pocket sevens. Shulman was eliminated in 12th place ($12,627), while Dorsey climbed among the top few spots on the leaderboard.
2016 WSOP bracelet winner Rafael Lebron was sent home in ninth place ($15,656) by Brent Roberts, who then lost a few key all-ins to find himself knocked out in eighth place ($19,674).
WSOP and WPT winner Ryan Tosoc surged into the lead when he picked up AA against Tim Reilly, who moved all-in with the AK. Tosoc’s aces held to eliminate Reilly in sixth place ($32,411).
Jared Griener moved all-in with the KJ from the cutoff and was called by Dorsey, who held A4 in the big blind. Dorsey flopped an ace and held from there to send Griener home in fifth place ($42,487).
Dorsey kept up his spree, knocking out Zinan Xu (4th – $56,496) and WPT champion Daniel Strelitz (3rd – $76,209) to take a solid lead into heads-up play against Ryan Tosoc.
He maintained that lead until the final hand arose. With blinds of 60,000-120,000 with 20,000 antes, Dorsey raised to 360,000 from the button with the A8. Tosoc three-bet to 800,000 holding the KJ and Dorsey four-bet shoved all-in. Tosoc made the call and found himself in need of help going into the flop.
The board ran out 10323Q and Dorsey’s ace high was enough to secure him the pot and the title. Tosoc earned $104,319 and 7000 Player of the Year points as the runner-up finisher. This was his fifth final table of the year, and the points he earned saw him climb into 62nd place in the POY rankings.
