The $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event at the 2019 World Series of Poker was the second-to-last bracelet to be awarded for the summmer, with Russian poker pro Dennis Strebkov claiming the gold just hours before the main event crowned a champion.
Strebkov defeated a field of 301 entrants in the event to claim the lion’s share of the $812,700 prize pool, pocketing $206,173 and his first career bracelet.
The 29-year-old Moscow resident had been knocking on the door of a major victory all summer, with a third-place showing in the $2,500 mixed eight-or-better event, and a fourth-place showing in the $10,000 pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better event to go along with four other cashes.
To earn the title, he had to overcome an incredibly stacked final table that included five bracelet winners in Paul Volpe (8th), Jim Collopy (7th), Konstantin Puchkov (6th), Andrey Zaichenko (5th), and the defending champion of the tournament, Brian Hastings (4th).
“When it was six-handed, we had six big bets each,” Strebkov told WSOP reporters. “We had really shallow stacks and the guys all played so good. Really tough players. I just got lucky – really lucky.”
In addition to the money, Strebkov also earned 720 Card Player Player of the Year points for his win. The POY is sponsored by Global Poker.
