We spoke with David Williams a few days before the main event and later that evening caught up with his mother, Shirley Williams, as she watched David from the rail.

Card Player: How has the Series been for you so far?

David Williams: Average, just average. I have luckily made money at the Bellagio.

[David won event #4, $5,000 no-limit hold'em, at the Bellagio Cup III, for a cool $129,120 on June 19.]

DW: I have cashed three or four times at the Series, medium amounts. But overall for the summer I am up and covered. There's not much left. Maybe I can win this tournament.

[David was deep in day 1 of event #52 when we spoke to him; he finished 15th in the event, earning $40,333.]

CP: How do you think the Series has been run this year?

DW: You know people are complaining but they don't realize just what they are having to deal with. Thousands of people and all of the events. I think with all of that and the completely unexpected, they are doing a good job.

....And then we found Shirley at the rail that evening.

CP: How has the Series been for you so far?

Shirley Williams: I played in four events and didn't cash, so it hasn't been too good.

CP: Was that the plan, to play about four?

SW: The plan was to get a sponsor and play in more events. But that didn't work out, so after David paid for the first three events. I wanted to buy my way into the Seniors Event because I monied in that event last year but I was not able to repeat that finish. I still hope to play in the main event. I am still looking for a sponsor.

[Shirley evidently found her sponsor, as she not only played in the main event, but went deep into day 3 and cashed for $29,883. David was not so fortunate in the main event and busted out on his day 1.]
