Sports betting reports from week one of the NFL season are still trickling in, but one gambler couldn’t wait to get in on the action in Mississippi.
Using four games from the final week of the NFL preseason, and four games from the NCAA slate of matchups, a Biloxi bettor at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino managed to hit an eight-game parlay.
His $900 wager paid out a cool $131,200, which is more than 145 times his bet.
The man needed wins or covers from college programs Cincinnati, Tulane, Clemson and Texas A&M in the first half, as well as the Falcons, Bills, Giants, and Dolphins in the NFL in order to secure the win. Getting seven out of eight correct would have paid nothing.
There are currently 18 states with legal sports betting in some form, and another 18 states that have legislation in the works and could be authorized by 2021.
According to a study released by the American Gaming Association, 38 million Americans plan to bet on NFL games this season. With legalized sports betting in many states, 6.9 million will likely place their bet in a legal sportsbook, as opposed to an illegal bookmaker or offshore account.
Last month it was announced that American bettors wagered more than $10 billion on sports in the 14 months following PASPA’s overturning.
