Kevin Buck Wins 2020 Wynn Spring Classic $1,600 Buy-in Event

The 2020 Wynn Poker Classic $1,000,000 guaranteed $1,600 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event drew a total of 687 entries. The top 71 entries made the money, but the largest share was ultimately awarded to Kevin Buck. He took home $166,837 after striking a heads-up deal with Justin Bond that locked up $146,837 for each of them and left the title, the trophy and $20,000 to play for.

Plenty of big names made the money in this event, including Steve Gross (60th place – $4,136), two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Dan Heimiller (57th place – $4,136), World Poker Tour champion and WSOP bracelet winner Jared Jaffee (54th place – $4,136), WPT winner Dylan Wilkerson (32nd place – $6,117), David Jackson (30th place – $6,117) and Shannon Shorr (27th place – $6,998).

The final day of this event resumed with 23 players remaining and three-time WSOP bracelet winner Brian Yoon in the lead. Yoon went on to fall from the top of the chip counts, ultimately finishing in 20th place ($9,174).

Buck had by far the largest stack by the time the nine-handed final table was set. Justin Bond began to close the gap by busting Jim Pannella in ninth place ($19,062) and continued to chip up from there until he had overtaken the lead.

Nikolaos Platis surged up the leaderboard by through Bond with a rivered straight against Bond’s top and bottom pairs. Bond knocked Behzad Teranie out in fourth place ($59,400) to secure the lead heading into three-handed play. Platis was the next to fall. He lost a huge chunk of his stack with top pair against the gutshot straight draw of Buck, who had semi-bluffed all-in with A4 on a 1053 flop. Platis called with A10, but the 2 on the turn gave Buck the wheel and the double up to more than 11 million in chips. Bond won a flip against Platis shortly after to send him to the rail in third place ($84,310).

Bond and Buck then struck the aforementioned deal that secured at least $146,837 for both players while setting aside the title and another $20,000 to play for. Bond began with 10,625,0000 to Buck’s 9,985,0000, and was able to dramatically extend that lead in the early going. He held more than a 7:1 chip lead at one point, but Buck fought his way back into the match and just managed to take the lead before the final hand was dealt.

With blinds of 150,000-300,000 and a 300,000 big blind ante, Buck raised to 650,000 from the button with 106. Bond called out of the big blind with A5. The flop came down K42 and Bond check-called a bet of 500,000 from Buck. The 6 hit the turn and both players checked. The 6 completed the board and Bond checked again. Buck fired 2,500,000. Bond check-raised all-in for 8,450,000 with his missed flush and straight draws that amounted to ace high by the river. Buck thought it over before making the call with his trip sixes, which were enough to secure the pot and the title.
