The coronavirus outbreak is once again resulting in a major change for the live tournament poker scene. The latest event impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic is the World Series of Poker Circuit’s season-ending Global Casino Championship. The event, which features a $1 million guaranteed prize pool and awards a WSOP gold bracelet, was slated to run from August 11-13 at Harrah’s Cherokee in North Carolina. The WSOP announced late on Friday, May 22 that the event would now be held online at WSOP.com on September 13.
More than a dozen WSOP Circuit live events have been postponed or canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. The WSOP has announced that it will be hosting a new Season Finale Online Circuit series, with 12 gold ring events. A total of 13 guaranteed spots into the Global Casino Championship will be awarded, with each of the 12 ring-event winners and the WSOP Online ‘Casino Champion’ earning a spot.
“We want to do right by our players and see the promised prize money put up for grabs,” said Ty Stewart, Executive Director of the WSOP. “Hopefully the choice of an East Coast or West Coast destination makes it more viable for qualifying players. Our Online Circuit events have been huge successes to date and WSOP.com is a viable alternative for the last qualification spots and this year’s championship. We look forward to returning to Harrah’s Cherokee in 2021 but until then, the show must go on… online.”
All of the players who have already qualified for this year’s Global Casino Championship will be able to play in this online version of the event but must be physically present in the states of New Jersey or Nevada in order to participate. Qualifying players need to create and/or verify their WSOP.com account ahead of the invitational tournament taking place and are encouraged to contact WSOP operations manager Johnny Hernandez at [email protected] for more details on registration logistics.
Players have been qualifying for this event throughout this WSOPC season in the following ways:
The Season Finale Online Circuit will not award ranking points, which means that the current top 50 in the points race are “considered locked for the Global Casino Championship” according to to the WSOP’s release.
