The Mutt Derby is returning to Palm Beach Kennel Club on January 16, 2021. This event invites everyone to enter their family dogs of all shapes and sizes to compete in a fun race series. The dogs will run 300 feet on the track without the use of the starting box or lure and will be called by their owner to the finish line. Other Mutt Derby dates include the following Saturdays: Jan. 30, Feb. 13, Feb. 27. On Saturday, Mar. 20, weight-division winners will return for the finales that will award cash prizes including $1,000 to the overall champion.

PBKC welcomes dogs that are spayed/neutered, up to date with vaccines, on a flea & tick prevention program, and are not aggressive toward people or other dogs to participate. Races will be organized by weight (3 weight classes). Greyhounds are welcome to observe but cannot race. Winning Mutts will receive trophies and be invited back to the Mutt Derby finale on Saturday, March 20, 2021. The registration fee is $20 for pre-registration and $25 on the day of the event. Sign up early as this event typically sells out.

“So many people have called to ask when we would be bringing back the Mutt Derby,” said PBKC President Pat Rooney, Jr. “This event is a fun day and a fan-favorite and there have been 31 different Mutt Derbies held here at PBKC throughout the years. Our last one was on November 17, 1998,” he added.

This family-fun event features the Mutt Derby races, pet parade, national anthem by Rena Jones, live music by The Old Hippies, balloon art/fun, face painting, mascot, prize drawings, a trackside BBQ, concession stand favorites, and more! It is free to attend but all Mutt Derby competitors must register. All proceeds from the event will be donated to local greyhound pet adoption groups.

PBKC is closely following CDC guidelines. For more info about their safety protocols, check out their official website.

GREYHOUND ADOPTION AT PBKC

A greyhound makes a gentle pet and a friend for life. PBKC works with three greyhound adoption groups to find wonderful homes for retired racers. They also work Hounds & Heroes which brings together retired veterans and service greyhounds. The groups include: Awesome Greyhound Adoptions/Hounds & Heroes, Greyhound Pet Adoption Fla. Southeast, Inc., and Greyhound Support Transport. The groups care for retired racers and screen and inform potential adopters to find the right pet for the right person or family. They are non-profit, volunteer-run groups that are very active in the community.
