Last Wednesday, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted to remove all COVID-induced restrictions on its state’s casinos starting this weekend.

Gamblers at the Encore Boston Harbor property celebrated the end of those restrictions the same way as most of the world celebrates New Year’s Eve.

People that were at the casino on Friday night gathered near a bar and counted down the seconds until the clock struck midnight and they could return to pre-pandemic conditions at the state’s largest casino.

“One year, two months and 14 days ago, this casino closed,” said a staff member on a microphone to the entire casino. “We wanted to celebrate Memorial Day weekend with you and we couldn’t. This year is a do-over.”

She then led the final 10-second countdown as everyone celebrated the end of mask mandates, social distancing requirements, and tight restrictions on the number of players at a given gaming table.

Unfortunately for poker players, neither MGM Springfield nor Encore Boston Harbor has announced when their respective poker rooms will reopen.
