Dominik Panka earned his second major tournament title yesterday afternoon as he took down the $2,100 no-limit hold’em bounty championship on GGPoker during the international segment of the 2021 World Series of Poker Online.
The Polish poker pro defeated a field of 1,064 entries to earn $185,228 between his finish and bounty payouts and his first piece of WSOP gold. With the victory, he bumped his career earnings to more than $3.2 million and is just a World Poker Tour title away from becoming a triple crown winner.
The 30-year-old’s live resume has cashes dating all the way back to when he was 21 years old, but he was almost certainly winning online before that. He made his mark on the poker world when he earned a European Poker Tour titles after taking down the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure main event for $1.4 million.
Despite his success, Panka is still likely unknown to American poker fans since he hasn’t played much on American soil or at the WSOP. Of his plethora of cashes, only four came on this side of the Atlantic. He cashed twice at the 2019 WSOP, finished 428th in the 2018 WSOP main event, and finished in-the-money one time at the 2017 series. Besides his online cashes over the last few years, his only other WSOP finish came at the 2017 WSOP Europe main event, finishing 76th for €15,131.
The tournament featured two days of action with the second and final day getting underway on Wednesday afternoon.
With 22 players left, Panka scored some knockouts to accumulate a big stack early. He went into the final table second in chips behind only Natalya Nikitina, but eliminated Vicnet Huang in ninth when his J
J
held up against A
10 to move into the chip lead.
From there, it looked like he was going to run away with the title as he scored the next two knockouts. By sending Noam Makay home in eighth and online legend Chris Moorman to the rail in seventh, Panka both padded his chip lead and added to his bounty payouts.
He continued to be steady at the top of the leaderboard as Oleg Eltsov busted in sixth, Nikitina was out in fifth and David Mzareulov was eliminated in fourth.
Three-handed play was where Panka encountered his first piece of adversity at the final table. Panka called a river bet with what ended up as second pair against Nir Amar’s flush and lost another big one when Amar flopped second pair and a gutshot against Panka’s top pair. Amar turned trips and got a sizable value bet in on the river to leave Panka as the short stack.
Panka battled back as three-handed play lasted longer than any other portion of the final table with all three players neck-and-neck at a couple points in time. Eventually, Amar moved all in with A-6 and ran into Fengdian Wang’s A-Q to bust in third. It left Wang with the smallest of chip leads going into heads-up play.
After battling in a couple sizable pots, it was Panka who held the tiny advantage in chips when they played for it all. It was a preflop all in with Wang tabling 9-9 and flipping with Panka’s A-J. When the river fell on a Q106
10K board, Panka drilled a straight to win the pot and eliminate Wang in second for $107,117.
