Michael Addamo Wins Poker Masters $100,000 Buy-In Event To Secure The Purple Jacket

Michael Addamo came into the final two events of the 2021 Poker Masters with zero cashes at the series. He had only played one of the first 10 tournaments on the schedule, showing up with an eye on the two largest buy-ins events offered during the series. The two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner from Australia emerged victorious in the $50,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em event on Saturday, Sept. 18 to earn $680,000. Just a day later, he came out on top in the $100,000 buy-in high roller to add another $1,160,000. Addamo was the only player to win two titles during the 12-event series. His victories in the highest-stakes events offered resulted in him being crowned the 2021 Poker Masters champion. As a result, he secured the Purple Jacket and $50,000 in added prize money to go along with the $1,840,000 he earned along the way.

When PokerGO reporters asked him where this two-day run of success ranks in the hot streaks of his young career, Addamo replied, "This is definitely up there. I don’t think I’ve won two tournaments in quick succession of this size before, so this is definitely probably the biggest one, I’d say.”

This win was the fourth-largest payday of Addamo’s career. The Melbourne native now has more than $14.5 million in career tournament earnings to his name.

In addition to the title and the money, Addamo also earned plenty of rankings points for the win in this prestigious event. The 400 PokerGO Tour points he secured were enough to move him into 22nd place on that leaderboard. The 808 total points he earned during this series were more than double the amount secured by the nearest competitor, Nick Petrangelo, who finished runner-up in this event along with making two other final tables during the series.

The final day of this event began with Addamo in the lead and just five players remaining. Mikita Badziakouski, who had won the final $25,000 by-in event of the series, was the clear short stack. He called off his last five or so big blinds with K-10 and was unable to beat out the Q-3 of Addamo, who had put him all-in preflop. Baziakouski earned $203,000 as the fifth-place finisher.

Stanley Tang was the next to fall. He called all-in from the button with KQ facing a raise for all of his chips from Addamo on his right. Addamo jhad two live cards with J9. Addamo made a pair of nines on the turn and held from there to eliminate Tang in fourth place ($319,000).

Alex Foxen got his last eight big blinds in preflop with K-4 dominated by the K-7 of Petrangelo. A seven-high flop left Foxen in rough shape, and he found no help on the turn or river. He was awarded $464,000 and 240 Card Player Player of the Year points for his third-place showing. This was his 16th POY-qualified final-table finish of the year. As a result, he now sits in 11th place in the 2021 POY race standings, which are sponsored by Global Poker.

Despite earning that knockout, Petrangelo was still out chipped by 4:1 when heads-up play began. Addamo was able to extend that advantage even further before the final hand of the series was dealt. With blinds of 15,000-30,000 and a 30,000 big blind ante, Petrangelo raised to 70,000 from the button with K8. Addamo defended his big blind with 73 and the flop came down 722. Addamo check-raised Petrangelo’s 50,000 continuation bet to 165,000. Petrangelo came along and the 10 rolled off the deck on the turn. Addamo checked and Petrangelo bet 250,000. Addamo called and the 5 completed the board. Addamo checked again and Petrangelo shoved for 545,000. Addamo went into the tank for a bit but eventually made the call with his sevens and deuces to lock up the pot and the title. Petrangelo earned $754,000 and 226 PokerGO Tour rankings points as the runner-up. He now sits in 28th place in that points race.
