The latest stop on the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour, the famous port town of Plymouth, was won yesterday by well-know British pro Julian Thew. He won £69,000 and a £3,000 seat to the grand final of the tour, in London in late November.
Thew outlasted 178 other players including several seasoned pros who made the final table.
Numbers were smaller than in previous events but the tournament still attracted many top-name professionals including Willie Tann, Barry Neville, and Neil Channing as well as previous winners Praz Bansi and Dave Smith.
The final table consisted of six professionals, two local players, and the GUKPT's second-ever female finalist Barbara Gibson from Chepstow. Chaz Chatta and Julian Thew eventually went heads up and fought it out for the right to be crowned the tour's eighth winner. After a relatively short encounter, Julian's pocket nines held up against the South Londoner's A-2 and the contest was over.
"Julian Thew is one of the nicest guys in UK Poker," said Jonathan Raab, manager for the tour, "and is thoroughly deserving of the biggest win of his career, so far. We look forward to seeing him in London and hope that he can become the first GUKPT winner to win back-to-back titles."
