The lottery can sometimes be a truly ugly enterprise.

According to the Michigan Lottery, a $1 million lottery ticket expired on May 5 without the winner coming forward. The state will pocket the money for its education fund.

While the money will benefits public education, that money rightfully belongs to someone. The $1 million was won in a Powerball drawing a year ago.

The ticket was purchased at Warren Market, located at 28069 Mound Road in Warren. The median personal income in Warren, Michigan is about $27,000.

The forfeiture of a $1 million gambling prize is nowhere close to a record for Michigan.

The record for an unclaimed lottery prize in Michigan was set in 1998 when a $34 million prize went unclaimed. That winning Michigan Lotto game ticket was purchased in East Lansing.

It’s uncommon for seven-figure lottery wins to expire, but it happens elsewhere in the country. In another recent incident, a $1.25 million ticket in Florida went unclaimed.

In March, a $10 million lottery ticket went unclaimed in Maryland, a state record.
