Sane Chung is the latest player to earn World Series of Poker gold during the 2022 WSOP Online series. The LA resident, playing under the screen name ‘Oohwee213’, overcame a field of 2,162 entries to secure the title and the top prize of $149,729.
This was by far the largest recorded score ever for Chung, whose previous top payday of $1,475 came for a 19th-place finish in a $150 buy-in event at the Card Player Poker Tour Bicycle Casino series in 2013.
Plenty of big names made deep runs in this event, including two-time bracelet winner Steven Wolansky (37th – $3,113), Katie ‘katelin’ Lindsay (27th – $4,767), and three-time bracelet winner Nick ‘CashUsKlay’ Schulman (6th – $27,728).
Schulman was sent to the virtual rail when his flopped open-ended straight draw was unable to beat out the pocket sevens of Chung on a ten-high flop. Schulman has more than $14.3 million in recorded tournament earnings.
Chung then proceeded to knock out Vuong ‘Luckyboy201’ Do (5th – $36,970) and Kevin ‘kingkung99’ Kung (4th – $49,715) to take a healthy lead into three-handed action. Dylan ‘Aurelius’ Smith eliminated Kahlil ‘dripseason1’ Francis in third place ($67,519), but was still trailing when heads-up play began.
Smith got his chips in ahead, raising from the button with AA and then calling the three-bet shove of Chung, who held KJ. The board ran out 1074Q9 to see Chung hit running cards for a king-high straight to secure the pot and the title. Smith earned $92,523 as the runner-up finisher, increasing his career total to more than $700,000.
