The $10,400 buy-in World Poker Tour World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas set its sights high with a record-setting $15,000,000 guarantee, the largest in live tournament history. Just a couple of levels into the second of three starting flights, the guarantee had already been surpassed. With 615 entries on day 1A, a total of 916 were needed to achieve the 1,531 necessary to see the prize pool beat the promised mark. That goal was met with a handful of minutes to spare in level 3 on day 1B, with registration still open for several more hours and an entire third starting day left to play.
By the time registration closed on day 1B, 1,053 entries had been made, bringing the total to 1,667. That means the prize pool has already grown to $16,346,400, with plenty of time for that number to grow even larger. Registration will remain open through the start of level 7 on day 1C.
After ten hour-long levels, day 1B ended with 438 players remaining. The chip leader is Brazil’s Aryan Oliveira with 1,551,000. Other top stacks include Andrew Crookston (879,000), Gin Tillman (825,000), three-time bracelet winner Ryan Leng (784,000), Nick Yunis (782,000), and WPT Champion Dan Smith (746,000).
There were several other big names with healthy stacks at the end of the night, including seven-time WSOPC ring winner Matt Stout (680,000), two-time WPT champion James Carroll (624,000), two-time bracelet winner and WPT champion Freddy Deeb (589,000), three-time bracelet winner Frank Kassela (554,000), three-time bracelet winner Upeshka De Silva (520,000), two-time WPT champion and bracelet winner Daniel Weinman (477,000), WPT champion Erkut Yilmaz (433,000), bracelet winner Tyler Cornell (431,000), Ray Qartomy (430,000), and four-time WPT champion Darren Elias (417,000).
Hundreds of contenders were sent to the rail on day 1B. Among the notable eliminations were 16-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth, recent WPT Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open champion Andrew Wilson, top 2022 Card Player Player of the Year race contender Farid Jattin, three-time WPT champion Eric Afriat, five-time bracelet winner Shaun Deeb, and chess player/content creator Alexandra Botez.
Botez has organized cash games with other well-known content creators before, including the widely-watched Hustler Casino Live broadcast that saw her emerge as some of the biggest winners despite poker pros Phil Hellmuth and Tom Dwan being among the contenders. She is hosting another ‘creator poker game’ which will be streamed on her BotezLive Twitch channel and the WPT YouTube channel on Dec. 14 starting at 2:00 PM.
While Botez has some poker experience, this was her first foray into the live tournament scene. She took to Twitter (where she has more than 428,000 followers) to share some thoughts on the debut.

Two-time WSOP Circuit ring winner Jamie Kerstetter was also among the long list of players knocked out during day 1B action. Kerstetter is hosting the WPT ladies meet-up game on Saturday, December 17th, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Wynn Poker Room. Card Player caught up with her to discuss that MUG, the $200,000 guaranteed $1,100 buy-in WPT Ladies Championship, and more.
Kerstetter, who is a Creative Producer for WPT Global, shared how exciting it has been to see the hard work that she and many others behind the scenes have put in payoff in a big way.
“We have been working so hard on this. It’s been four or five months of constantly planning live streams, planning high-stakes games, working with the Wynn, with WPT, with WPT Global – everyone, to plan this,” she revealed. “There was this nagging feeling – ‘What if we don’t hit the guarantee?’ Will they never let us do this again?’ But we are on the second of three starting days and we’ve crushed the guarantee.”

Day 1C will begin at 11:00 AM on Dec. 14. Players will start with starting 100,000 in chips, with initial blinds of 300-500 blinds with a 500 big blind ante. Players will battle it out for ten hour-long levels with 15-minute breaks every two levels. There will be a 90-minute dinner break after level 6.
Day 2 is set to kick off at noon on Dec. 15 with 3,000-5,000 with a 5,000 big blind ante for level 11. A total of 673 players have already made it to day 2, with 235 from day 1A and 438 from day 1B.
