Jaffe, O'Dwyer, Dimov, & Mosbock Win Big At Triton Monte Carlo Stop

A Look At The Latest High-Stakes Tournament Champions Decided On The French Riviera

The 2023 Triton Super High Roller Series Monte Carlo features a somewhat different organizational approach than most of the tour’s previous stops, with the majority of the highest buy-in tournaments frontloaded instead of being placed toward the end of the schedule. The $200,000 buy-in invitational event, the $125,000 buy-in main event, and the $106,000 buy-in were three of the first five events to kick off, which resulted in a few other high-stakes tournaments losing a bit of the spotlight that they would typically command.

Here is a look back at two early events that wrapped up while those marquee tournaments were taking place, as well as two additional events that have finished since the conclusion of the series’ main event.

2023 Triton Monte Carlo $52,000 NLH Bounty

The $52,000 buy-in no-limit bounty event attracted 57 entries, creating a prize pool of $1,710,000 that was split among the top nine finishers.

World Poker Tour champion Jonathan Jaffe, just a month removed from a win in the $50,000 buy-in finale at the Poker Masters, came away with his first Triton title and the top prize of $501,000.

Jaffe also secured an additional $180,000 with eight knockouts and his own bounty earned as the champion. He locked up the win in dramatic fashion, making a hero call against bracelet winner Brian Kim to bring the event to its conclusion.

This was Kim’s 13th final-table finish of the year, with 4,656 Card Player Player of the Year points and more than $3.2 million in POY earnings accrued across those scores. Kim now sits in 17th place in the 2023 POY standings presented by Global Poker as a result.

Jaffe increased his career earnings to more than $10.8 million with this victory.

Place Player Earnings POY Points
1 Jonathan Jaffe $501,000 510
2 Brian Kim $359,000 425
3 Leonard Maue $233,000 340
4 Viacheslav Buldygin $176,000 255
5 Aleksejs Ponakovs $136,000 213
6 Michael Soyza $106,000 170
7 Ferdinand Putra $84,000 128
8 Lucas Greenwood $65,000 85
9 Mikalai Vaskaboinikau $50,000 43

2023 Triton Monte Carlo $26,000 NLH Eight-Max

Like the event won by Jaffe, this $26,000 buy-in eight-max tournament was played out in a single day, by design.

With 57 entries, there was $1,425,000 in prize money up for grabs. Again, the top nine finishers earned a share of that pool, with the largest chunk ultimately going to Steve O’Dwyer. This was his second career victory on the tour.

“Winning is nice,” O’Dwyer told Triton reporters. “I’ve been waiting to get this second Triton title for a while.”

The American-born poker pro based out of Ireland now has more than $40 million in career earnings thanks to the $416,000 he took home in this event. He also cashed in the $106,000 buy-in event for $156,000 and finished fourth in the $42,400 mystery bounty for another $272,000 at this series. With two titles, 13 final tables, and nearly $5.5 million in to-date POY earnings, O’Dwyer is now just outside the top 20 in the 2023 POY standings.

Other top POY contenders who made the final table included 14th-ranked Michael Watson (3rd – $195,00) and 27th-ranked Punnat Punsri (7th – $70,000). Punsri followed this deep run with a fourth-place finish in the $106,000 buy-in just a few days later for $1,068,000.

2023 Triton Monte Carlo $31,800 NLH Seven-Max

The table size decreased, but the buy-in and field grew for the $31,800 buy-in seven-max event. A total of 145 entries resulted in a $4,350,000 prize pool, with 23 players cashing. Two-time bracelet winner Ognyan Dimov emerged victorious in the end, earning a career-best payday of $1,010,000 for the win.

This was not only the first Triton win for the 2015 European Poker Tour Deauville champion, but also the Bulgarian’s very first Triton cash.

“It’s my first time, but I hope it’s not the last,” he said after the win.

Dimov now has more than $5.7 million in career tournament earnings. Lucas Greenwood, who finished fourth for $374,000, was at his third final table of the festival, having placed eighth in both the $52,000 bounty and the $26,000 eight-max.

7 Joao Vieira $172,000 252

2023 Triton Monte Carlo $26,000 NLH Eight-Max

Just a handful of days after placing second in the $200,000 invitational for a career-best $2,690,000 payday, Mario Mosbock recorded his second-largest score ever by taking down the $42,400 mystery bounty event. The Austrian bested a 162-entry field to earn $718,000.

He now has more than $4.4 million in recorded earnigns, with more than $3.4 million of that being secured in the past week.

Michael Soyza recorded his third final-table showing of the festival, placing third for $333,000. This was his seventh final table of the year, with one win. The Maylasian poker pro bow has nearly $4.8 million in to-date POY earnings after this latest win, with his 3,512 POY points good for 50th place on the leaderboard.
