Two World Series of Poker bracelets were awarded on June 2, 2024, with both being going to players earning their second titles at the series. Shortly before Bryce Yockey took down the $5,000 pot-limit Omaha event, Nick Guagenti closed out the $1,500 limit hold’em tournament to earn $121,074 and the hardware.
Guagenti’s first bracelet win came back in 2020, when he took down a $2,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em event during the WSOP Online for $305,433. The Westerville, Ohio native now has two bracelets and more than $2.7 million in recorded tournament earnings to his name.
This latest victory also awarded Guagenti 720 Card Player Player of the Year points, enough to move him within reach of the top 300 in the 2024 POY standings presented by Global Poker.
While 67 players made the money in this event, only six survived to the final day of play. Guagenti was out in front when play resumed. Bradley Carter was the first to fall, being sent to the rail thanks to flush-over-flush in a hand against two-time bracelet winner Juha Helppi.
Guagenti eliminated short stack Qinghai Pan in fifth place ($26,807) to enter four-handed play with the lead, but he was soon surpassed by Joseph Brodsky. Guagenti was able to regain the the top spot in time for the next elimination. Helppi folded on the turn in a clash with Guagenti and was left on fumes. He got the last of his small stack in on the next hand with K-4 and ran into K-J for George Chen. Neither player connected and Helppi was knocked out in fourth place ($37,880). The Finnish poker legend now has more than $7.6 million in tournament earnings after this latest deep run.
Chen got the last of his short stack in on a double paired board with an overpair. His pocket queens had been outrun, though, and Guagenti had turned jacks full of fives with K-J suited. The river was a blank and Chen was sent to the rail in third place ($54,708).
Heads-up play began with a 7:3 chip lead for Guagenti over Brodsky. The two battled for several hours, but Guagenti was eventually able to pull away in time for the final hand of the tournament. Brodsky called all-in from the big blind with 84 and was dominated by the Q8 that Guagenti had raised from the button. The board came down AQ67J to bring the tournament to a close. Brodsky grew his career tournament earnings to $121,158 thanks to the $80,717 he secured as the runner-up.
