Despite all the attention on Daniel Negreanu’s seventh World Series of Poker bracelet win in the Poker Players Championship, there were two other seven-figure scores up for grabs Thursday night in the $1,500 Millionaire Maker.

Nearly 11,000 players had entered, but the tournament was down to just Justin Carey, of Somerville, Massachusetts, and Argentina’s Franco Spitale, who was enjoying a 2:1 advantage. With the PokerGO cameras rolling, the two players saw an unlikely hand play out that brought plenty of river-card fireworks with the big money and gold on the line.

With blinds at 2,000,000-4,000,000 with a 4,000,000 big blind ante, Carey limped in with 2Heart Suit 2Club Suit and Spitale raised to 14 million with AClub Suit 10Spade Suit from the big blind. His opponent, with 94 million remaining, thought a bit and then moved all in.

That brought an instant call from Spitale for a nearly 200-million chip pot. With Carey’s tournament life at risk, he was in a truly classic coin flip situation. According to the Card Player Poker Odds Calculator, Carey had a 51.2% chance to win the pot with Spitale’s hand checking in at 48.1%.

The flop pushed the odds significantly in Carey’s favor, however, after the 10Heart Suit 5Heart Suit 2Diamond Suit hit the board. Carey now held a 96.6% chance to rake the pot with his set of deuces and turn the tables in the match.

The AHeart Suit on the turn gave Spitale at least a semblance of hope, moving his chances to 9.1%. Either of the remaining tens or aces and he would score his first WSOP bracelet and a mountain of cash.

His rail from Argentina continued to cheer as each card was dealt and seemingly willed the ADiamond Suit to fall on the river with chants of “Messi, Messi,” (in reference to the soccer legend) handing Spitale the pot with a bigger full house.

Spitale’s rail became even more raucous, and the new millionaire dropped to his knees in celebration. His supporters even rained beer down on the new bracelet winner before enveloping him in a group hug.

This was the biggest win of Spitale’s career and his lifetime tournament earnings are now at $1.9 million. Carey certainly didn’t go home empty handed. He collected just over $1 million for his efforts.
