Poker players in Michigan will soon have one less option. MotorCity Casino in Detroit has confirmed that the property will be closing its poker room on Aug. 5 at 6 a.m.

The casino hasn’t announced the reason for the closure, but the property ended the Poker VIP program on July 1, according to PlayMichigan.com. MotorCity is owned by Ilitch Holdings, which also owns the Little Caesars pizza franchise, the Detroit Red Wings, the Detroit Tigers, and other Detroit-area companies.

According to Poker Atlas, MotorCity was by far the biggest option in the city with 37 tables and cash games running as high as $20-$40.

There was also a 10-table room at Hollywood Casino at Greektown, but that closed last month as well.

Detroit-area players will still have one other option in the city, with MGM Grand’s 14-table room. Perhaps players will look across the border as well, with the Caesars Windsor Casino in Ontario offering 85 tables with cash games and daily tournaments.

Michigan also offers legal online poker via BetMGM, WSOP.com, and PokerStars. WSOP unveiled a shared liquidity platform in May featuring players in Nevada, New Jersey, and Michigan. PokerStars launched their shared liquidity platform between players in Michigan and New Jersey in 2023.
