A Las Vegas couple was arrested last Friday for allegedly stealing $650,000 in cash and chips from a casino in the nearby city of Primm, Nevada, a small town located about 45 miles south of Las Vegas near the border with California.

Police allege that a day earlier, Lydia Salmen, 70, and her husband John Salmen, 63, stole the funds from an unmanned cashier’s cage at the Primm Valley Casino and Hotel.

The heist method? Lydia Salmen allegedly just jumped over the counter to collect the loot.

Security Footage Leads To Arrest

Video surveillance from the theft as well as footage from a month earlier was used to identify the couple, according to reports. Both were arrested and charged with burglary of a business and theft greater than $100,000 and are being held in the Clark County Detention Center. Both refused to talk to police and asked for an attorney after being taken into custody.

“Approximately $625,569.47 in cash, $27,000 in chips, and coins were recovered from the couple’s residence,” KVVU reported.

Police noted in an arrest report that the couple may have been motivated to steal the funds to “pay for medication and/or bills that were beginning to rack up.”

Other Recent Casino Thefts

Attempts to steal from Las Vegas casinos are nothing new. In November 2023, Erik Gutierrez Martinez pleaded guilty to one count of theft of more than $100,000 after attempting to scam Circa Casino out of more than $1 million. After his arrest more than $300,000 remained unaccounted for.

In September 2023, a hotel operations manager at the Aria was charged with stealing more than $770,000 from the casino from July 2022 to July 2023. Police said Brandon Rashaad Johnson issued hundreds of fraudulent refunds to his own debit card and used some of those funds for Louis Vuitton and Versace shopping sprees, the use of private jets, spa visits, purchasing a home, and more.
