Those who grew up in the 1980s may remember the sci-fi movie RoboCop, which saw a cyborg police officer played by Peter Weller patrolling the mean streets of a futuristic Detroit. Now a growing number of casinos across the country are putting security robots on patrol.

While these “robocops” may not be blowing away bad guys, Knightscope’s ASRs (Autonomous Security Robots) can greet guests with a friendly voice and provide additional eyes and ears for the casino’s security team. Robots also offer a two-way communication system to enhance the safety of visitors and workers.

The company’s bots are now used in casinos in Las Vegas, Iowa, Illinois, Louisiana, Kansas, and Michigan. Knightscope is made up of tech entrepreneurs, former law enforcement officials, and military veterans that focus on technology to improve public safety.

The company now has an agreement with Penn Entertainment to provide security features to its 43 gaming properties nationwide

“We are overjoyed that we will be providing Knightscope technologies across its portfolio to protect the surge of guests arriving and departing from all of its properties daily,” Knightscope chairman and CEO William Santana Li said.

Adding To A Casino’s Security Team

So how do these security robots work? An ATS stands a bit over five feet tall and weighs over 400 pounds. The robots are equipped with wheels, uses voice recognition software, recharges itself without human intervention, and more.

Other features include 360-degree, eye-level video streaming and recording in high definition; thermal anomaly detection; and automatic signal detection. The systems are completely weatherproof, according to the company, and each unit is intended to patrol on its own 24/7.

At casinos, the ATS can detect people during restricted hours and has a license plate recognition feature to serve as a parking monitor. An ATS can secure large outdoor spaces during winter months, monitor entrances, oversee registration, patrol building interiors, engage with guests, and more.

“Give yourself additional eyes, ears and a voice by utilizing our fully integrated Knightscope Security Operations Center user interface,” Knightscope notes of the robots. “Now you have an advanced, force-multiplying physical deterrent on your team, giving you the power to better secure the places people work, study, and visit.”
