Big Names Triumph In High Stakes European Poker Tour Barcelona Side Events

The 2024 PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona festival kicked off Aug. 26. Since then there have already been several high-stakes tournaments to wrap up inside Casino Barcelona, including the €100,000 buy-in tournament which was won for a second straight year by Kayhan Mokri. In this article we will take a closer look at six other high-stakes tournaments that have already played down to a winner at this massive series.

EPT Barcelona €10,200 No-Limit Hold’em Mystery Bounty

The first event with a buy-in of five figures or on the agenda was the €10,200 mystery bounty tournament. With 88 entries, there was $947,496 in total prize money up for grabs.

The last bounty was captured by Boris Angelov, who earned $205,794 as the champion. The 2024 World Series of Poker main event fifth-place finisher now has more than $4.1 million in recorded scores to his name.

Angelov also earned 480 Card Player Player of the Year points as the champion. With 3,909 total points, he is now the 21st-ranked contender in the 2024 POY race standings presented by Global Poker.

Runner-up Ren Lin earned $120,657 and 400 points at his 10th final table of the year. He surged to 16th place in the POY rankings after this latest deep run.

EPT Barcelona €12,300 No-Limit Hold’em Bounty

Next up was the €12,300 bounty tournament, which attracted 62 entries by the end of registration. Steve O’Dwyer came away with the trophy, earning $235,009 for the win.

The Ireland resident now has nearly $45 million in recorded tournament earnings after this latest victory. This was his 36th title and 295th in-the-money finish. A week after this victory, he finished fifth in the €50,000 buy-in high roller for another $132,978.

David Coleman, who is currently ranked second in the POY standings, finished fourth in this event for $78,921 and 180 points. This was his 20th final table of the year.

EPT Barcelona €20,000 No-Limit Hold’em

Just a few days before taking down the €100,000 buy-in, Norway’s Kayhan Mokri came out on top in the €20,000 no-limit hold’em high roller for a $288,207 payday. Mokri now has more than $5.3 million in career cashes, with all three of his recorded live titles coming at this venue in the past two years.

Sam Greenwood, who placed fourth in the mystery bounty a day earlier, earned $283,083 as the runner-up finisher.

Like Mokri, Jesse Lonis made the final table in both this event and the €100,000 buy-in. He placed fifth and fourth in the two tournaments, respectively. Lonis earned 450 total POY points for the pair of deep runs, bringing his total to 6,980. That’s good for third place in the overall standings.

EPT Barcelona €25,000 No-Limit Hold’em

With 46 entries, the €25,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em high roller has mor than $1.2 million in prize money to pay out amongst its top six finishers. When the dust settled it was American poker pro Byron Kaverman who had gathered all of the chips. Kaverman walked away with $422,977 and the trophy, growing his lifetime earnings to more than $20.6 million in the process.

Poker triple crown winner Michael Watson finished third for $190,032. This was his 14th final table of 2024, with three titles won. The Canadian pro now sits in fourth place in the POY rankings with 5,764 total points.

Niklas Astedt, who finished third in the 2024 WSOP main event, placed fifth in this tournament for $110,334. This was the Swedish online poker superstar’s first live cash since his deep run at the series in July.

EPT Barcelona €30,000 No-Limit Hold’em

Jean Noel Thorel extended his lead on France’s all-time tournament poker earnings leaderboard with a win in the €30,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em high roller. Thorel topped the field of 54 entries to secure $568,731 and the trophy.

He now has $20.4 million in lifetime cashes under his belt, or over than $5 million more than the second-ranked player on the French money list, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier ($15.2 million).

Thorel defeated two-time bracelet winner Justin Saliba heads-up for the title. Saliba earned $376,401 as the runner-up.

EPT Barcelona €50,000 No-Limit Hold’em

The second-largest buy-in of the series was the €50,000 high roller no-limit hold’em tournament. The prize pool ended up at roughly $1.4 million thanks to 26 entries. The event concluded thanks to a deal that saw Leonard Maue declared the winner. The German earned $425,273 and the title.

Maue recently placed fourth in the Super High Roller Bowl IX for $750,000. With this latest win, his career earnings now sit at $5.1 million.

Two-time bracelet winner Nick Petrangelo earned the largest payout as a result of the deal, but was not ultimately crowned the champion after losing a flip for the trophy. Petrangelo cashed for $449,695 as the runner-up to bring his lifetime haul to $38.5 million.
