World Series Of Poker Europe Update: Day 6

Day 6 of the World Series Of Poker Europe, presented by Betfair, saw the £5,000 pot-limit Omaha event play down from 45 to the final nine. David Ulliott

Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott was one of the first day 2 exits when his trip kings were beaten by Markus Golser’s straight to the ace.

Things were far better for chip leader Jason Mercier — he eliminated Ville Wahlbeck and Robert Williamson III one after another in back-to-back hands to launch himself further into the distance.

Then, Erik Friberg sent Doyle Brunson hurtling to the rail, and Ilkka Koskinen decided yesterday’s winner Sherkhan Farnood should give someone else a go, and sent the new champ packing.

As the day continued, the amount of well-known poker faces began to dwindle. Among notables hitting the rail were Andy Bloch, Phil Laak, Roy Brindley, David Williams, and Bruno Fitoussi.

As the tournament approached the bubble, Mike McDonald tangoed with Shaun Deeb a couple of times before losing all his chips to him. Then Deeb butted heads with the monstrous stack of Jason Mercier, and weakened by the blow, was knocked out soon after by Eric Dalby.

With 18 places paid, Joe Beevers let the room know the bubble was about to pop. “We have an all in,” he announced as Alex Kravchenko, holding A A 10 9 went head-to-head with Ilkka Koskinen’s A A 10 2. The board came down Q Q 7 7 8, and the general concensus of bystanders was, “Sick.”

Jolyne Thompson was first in the money to go. She took £14,438 from the £825,000 prize pool for 18th place. Scandinavian pro Stephen Kjaerstad was next on the execution line. He went out in 17th for £14,438 at the hands of Theo Jorgensen. Jorgensen continued unleashing the fury by knocking out Allen Cunningham in 16th Place (£14,438).

Padraig ParkinsonIt was Padraig Parkinson who kicked off Chris Bjorin’s downfall. Parkinson’s preflop raise was called by Joe Beevers, and Bjorin followed this up with an all-in. Parkinson left the pair to battle it out.

Bjorin: A A 10 6
Beevers: K Q J 9

Board: J 10 3 9 9

Beevers stole the show with a full house and Bjorin hit the rail in 15th place earning £16,500 for his efforts.

Justin Smith was the next fatality. He finished in 14th collecting £16,500 after busting from the table of doom, due to the actions of Tomi Myback, and once again, Beevers.

Padraig Parkinson got his marching orders in 13th, taking home £16,500. After a gutsy performance, the Irishman busted out at the hands of a very determined Mercier, and with that the event lost a great character.

Beevers’ run of luck ended when he also had a run in with the ultimate aggressor of the day, Mercier. All-in preflop, his A K 8 5 ran head first into Mercier’s A K J 10 as the board fell Q 6 5 9 8. He finished 12th collecting a not too stingy £18,562 for a courageous performance.

Neil Channing’s exit in 11th for £18,562 meant the tournament would see one final redraw in order to get its final table. It was eventually Ilkka Koskinen who became the final table bubble boy, and in 10th place, he had to settle for £18,562, a good distance short from the £218,626 first prize. The Jorgensen

Denmark’s Jorgensen took Finland’ Koskinen out to become the end of day chip leader with an unbelievable stack of 897,000. Next in the que going into day 3 of the event is American Jason Mercier with 650,000 chips, and Finnish Tomi Myback is not too far in the distance with 434,000.

After that the chip stacks are as follows:

Sorel Mizzi 290,000
Chris Ferguson 282,000
Eric Dalby 277,000
Erik Friberg 189,000
David Penly 162,000
Max Pescatori 126,000

Check back at CardPlayer.com tomorrow to find out who becomes champion of event No. 2, the £5,000 pot-limit Omaha.
