The fifth leg of the 2009 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour stopped in Newcastle where it was won by Londoner, Tony Phillips. The 22-year-old beat off 151 players to pick up the top prize of £47,200 and become the youngest player ever to win a GUKPT main event.

The final table is not unfamiliar for the young Brit however as in leg 4 of the Tour last year he was pipped to the post by Ketul Nathwani and could only take down second place. This time, it was Steve Jelinek who took second when, in the final hand, his pocket nines were beaten by the A-J of Phillips with a jack falling on the flop.

The final table was the fastest in the Tour’s history. The results are as follows:

First — Tony Phillips (£47,200)
Second — Steve Jelinek (30,200)
Third — Henning Granstad (£20,400)
Fourth — Dave Clark (£12,850)
Fifth — Peter Smithson (£9,050)
Sixth — Laurence Houghton (£7,550)
Seventh — Haitao Wu (£6,050)
Eighth — Mohamed Muse (£4,550)
Ninth — Finn Stewart (£3,000)

The main Tour will now take a break until August when it kicks off again with the sixth leg in Luton. In the meantime, the GUKPT Summer Series will keep things going in June with three mini-festivals on consecutive weekends in Bolton, Aberdeen, and Walsall.
