The Irish Sports Betting Awards, which took place at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin last Thursday, brought great news for the Macau Sporting Club in Cork in the form of a “Best Poker Tournament” award.

The club’s Irish Classic Poker Festival won out over Boylepoker.com’s International Poker Open, the Fitzwilliam Card Club’s End of Month game, and Ladbrokes’ Irish Poker Festival.

The club’s poker room manager, Ken Corkery said, “I was surprised but absolutely delighted when they read our name out. The competition was strong and a couple of the events have big brands behind them but we’ve been plugging away down in Cork for seven years now and I suppose we’ve gotten a few things right along the way.

I’d like to thank all the staff at the Macau, without whom we couldn’t have achieved the high standard players’ have come to expect, my family for all the support they give me and the club, and all the players who pass through our doors for helping us achieve the unique atmosphere at the club.”

This year, the Festival will run from Aug. 10-16, including the €100,000 guaranteed main event starting on Aug. 13. Last year, the champion of this event was Rob Taylor after he beat 169 of some of the best players in the world to the top prize of €46,000.
