With 158 players in contention at this year’s Irish Poker Festival at the Macau Sporting Club in Cork, it was Peter “Knuckles” Higgins who emerged victorious, taking home €45,000 in the process.
Darren Taylor and Higgins went head-to-head for first place and in the ultimate hand, Taylor raised Higgins’ preflop bet of 100,000 to 380,000, prompting Higgins to eventually go all in. Taylor insta-called and flipped over pocket tens. Higgins showed A-6. As the board came down 9-6-3-J, Taylor looked pretty safe, but an ace on the river sent him to the rail in second place, €28,000 richer.
The final table payouts were:
1: Peter Higgins – €45,000
2: Darren Taylor – €28,000
3: John O’Shea – €18,000
4: Mark Flanagan – €13,000
5: Pat O’Donoghue – €10,000
6: Tom Harvey – €8,500
7: Josef Gulas – €7,000
8: Pauric McBearty – €5,500
9: James Browning – €4,000
The field for the €1,000 + €100 buy-in event was slightly less compared to last year’s record breaking field of 169, but up on 2007’s figure of 114. The club was recently awarded the title of “Best Poker Tournament” for this event at the Irish Sports Betting Awards ceremony held in Dublin.
