Passersby can’t help but try and sneak a peak inside the stained-glass windows that enclose the legendary area inside the Bellagio poker room affectionately known as Bobby’s Room. It’s reserved for the highest-staked live cash games in the world, and despite the flailing economy, the action that has taken place in the past couple of weeks has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Nearly every night, Bobby’s Room has been occupied by the Big Game regulars, including Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, David Benyamine, and John Juanda, as well as a few faces from overseas like Erik Sagstrom of Sweden and Ville Wahlbeck, of Finland.
“The last couple of weeks, there has been some really, really big poker action,” said poker pro David Oppenheim. “Every night, there has been a $2,000-$4,000 game of a mix of seven or eight games, or $3,000-$6,000, depending on which players are there and what kinds of moods they are in. There has also been a $1,000-$2,000 pot-limit Omaha game that’s been going very regularly. Other than the Andy Beal game, I believe this is probably the biggest game that we’ve had in Las Vegas. There are million-dollar pots every hour.”
Players generally remain tight-lipped about all of the dirty details that go on behind the doors inside Bobby’s Room, but many pros don’t mind giving poker fans a little information about their nosebleed games. Here are a few posts from top pros on Twitter:
Todd Brunson: “Had a pretty good night in bobbys room. Almost had a big win til patrik sat down and won 300k in 30 minutes” posted at 12:35 a.m. July 21.
“Playing 2k-4k 8 games in bobbys room with eli, Jen, Johnny chan, Jeff lisandro with Joe Cassidy otw” posted at 10 p.m. July 21.
Doyle Brunson: “Time for poker with the boys from Finland. They have damaged the poker economy around here for the past month” posted at 4 p.m. on July 21.
“tweeters are probably tired of hearing this, but the games at Bobby’s Room just get bigger and bigger. I started playing, couldn’t help it!!” posted at 4:21 p.m. July 18.
“played Chinese Poker, $15,000 a point. 5 handed, 2 waiting. What’s going on here? 2.1 million swing in 1 hour. Unbelievable high playing!” posted at 2:58 p.m. July 17.
Jennifer Harman: “Played cash games tonight. Lots of action in Bobby’s Room. Earlier they were playing 15K a point Chinese poker. Now that’s a big game” posted at 2:32 a.m. on July 16.
The $15,000-a-point Chinese game was more of a fluke rather than a frequent occurrence, according to Oppenheim. “More regularly, it would be for $5,000-a-point, which has never really been seen until this year. To give you an example, I won’t name names, but one of the players lost $1.8 million playing $5,000-a-point Chinese. It’s just an incredibly big game, and I’m not sure if the players even realize how big it is.”
With the World Series of Poker having come to an end, it’s likely that the games will die back down, but for now, die-hard high-stakes pros are indulging in the action.
