Poker research company, Poker Players Research (PPR), has announced the results of a recent study into worldwide online poker markets to see which country is the biggest.

According to eGaming Review, the data found that America is in fact the largest with 10 million real money online players, despite the affects of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, and indeed increased focus on the European market.

The UK is next in line with 1.9 million, and Germany follows with 1.6 million. France comes in in fourth place with 1.3 million, and the Scandinavian market is next with 1.4 million.

Sites such as PokerStars and Full Tilt stayed in the US market after the bill was passed in 2006, and this meant they could take the majority share of the market. Those who pulled out of America when online poker was banned may have missed out greatly. However, companies like PartyGaming that reached settlements with the US authorities, did so with the hope that one day they could re-enter the market.

Recently, the European Commission approached discussions with the U.S. about the current ban, insisting that it contravenes global trade rules. The EU believes the ban is completely one-sided and unfair as companies such as Harrah’s and the Las Vegas Sands Group are able to operate in Europe but similar European-based companies are prevented from accessing the $4 billion per year U.S. market.

The European Commission said that it could resort to seeking compensation via the World Trade Organisation on the basis that the U.S. breached rules relating to online gaming.
