The BorgataThe 2009 Borgata Poker Open kicked off today with its first event of the series, a $350 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament. Tournament officials are gunning for huge turnouts, and so far, the prognosis is good with 850 players showing up for the first event. The tournament drew some notable players in Eugene Todd, Lacey Jones, Dale Pinchot, Jason Young, Will “The Thrill” Failla and Card Player Player of the Year candidate Mike Leah (read about Leah’s race for the title in A Poker Life — Mike Leah).

A regular to the Borgata’s tournaments, longtime grinder Al Krux (pictured below) was in attendance and expressed fondness for his favorite casino.

“Borgata is really the only place I will consistently play. If they are offering an event, I am playing,” said Krux. “They just do it right. The structures, the staff, everything combined really makes one of the best tournaments in the industry.”

Al KruxThe tournament series will feature more than just no-limit hold’em, offering everything from mixed games to pot-limit Omaha to a heads-up competition, as well as the traditional seniors and ladies events. View the entire Borgata Poker Open schedule.

The series concludes with a $3,500 WPT main event that begins Sept. 19. The Borgata is confident that the field size will more than eclipse their $2 million guarantee.

“It’s great to see so many familiar faces taking to the felt,” stated Ray Stefanelli, director of poker marketing for Borgata. “Borgata strives to provide the best tournaments in the industry. Consideration is always given to the players in terms of value, competition, and entertainment. We made this year’s televised championship event accessible to every player, while maintaining our highest standards in structure and customer service.”
