WCOOP logoThe second and final day of the 2009 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) came and went, but not without its share of fireworks. A total of 178 players returned to the virtual felt, all with their eyes on the $1,715,200 first-place prize.

Day 1 chip leader Jason “TheMasterJ33” Dewitt had a tough situation on his hands, but it was a good problem to have. Having made day two of the WPT Borgata Poker Open, Dewitt was forced to simultaneously play in both tournaments. The decision may have cost him, and he was eliminated from the WCOOP main event in 87th place, earning $17,152. Luckily, he salvaged his day by ending his day at Borgata in 13th place, overall.

As the final table approached, two players in particular were doing their best to abuse the bubble as much as possible. Fresh off of his second WCOOP bracelet of the series, Daniel “djk123” Kelly teamed up with WPT Championship winner Yevgeniy “Jovial Gent” Timoshenko to crush the short stacks and enter the final table as the two overwhelming chip leaders.

The bubble abuse created more than a few short stacks, who quickly found themselves at risk. Mer “PeachyMer” Brit entered the final table in sixth place, but a pair of aces with a queen kicker saw her lose the majority of her stack to Udon Wannit’s aces with a king kicker. She lasted a few more hands before she was eventually taken out by Kelly in ninth place, earning $96,480.

The next four players went out in rapid succession, starting with Supa4Real in eighth place. Sitting on the short stack, Supa4Real made his move with pocket tens, only to run into the pocket jacks of Benjamin “Chong94” LaFew. He picked up $182,240 for his finish.

Daniel KellyAfter moving up two spots, Mudvaynes saw himself out in seventh place for $268,000. The short-stacked player was all in with 10 high, but Kelly’s queen high held to send him from the tournament.

LaFew was the next to go in sixth place when he called all in against Kelly. (pictured left) His A-J was the best hand, but Kelly’s 7-6 flopped a straight to take the pot, giving LaFew $375,200 for his troubles.

Looking to get back into the action, Timoshenko was the next to claim a victim when he busted Jamie “Xaston” Kaplan. Kaplan was all in with middle pair against Timoshenko’s top pair with a flush draw. The flush came, twice, and Kaplan banked $482,400 for fifth place.

All of this action happened within a span of just a few orbits, and reddeevil picked up several hundred thousand dollars just by biding his time. It was time he made his move, and a couple double-ups later, he was back in business.

Things hadn’t been going Kelly’s way when he was finally put away in fourth place. Kelly held pocket tens and was all in preflop, but Timoshenko woke up with kings and sent the young Villanova student home with $643,200. With two WCOOP wins in the series and a strong showing in the main event, Kelly was awarded Player of the Series honors. As a reward for his performance, he will now get a free trip to the 2010 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

His comeback was short-lived, and reddeevil finally found himself on the outside looking in just a short while later, when his straight and flush draw went up against Timoshenko’s two pair. The flush came on the river, but it also improved Timoshenko to a full house, sending reddeevil out in third place, good for $933,712.

Yevgeniy TimoshenkoHeading into heads-up play, Timoshenko (pictured right) held a more than a 3-1 chip lead over his opponent Udon Wannit. Despite a non-scheduled break, it didn’t take long for the tournament to end. On the final hand, both players saw a flop of KClub Suit 8Heart Suit 6Spade Suit, and the money went in. Udon Wannit had 6Club Suit 5Club Suit, but he was in bad shape to Timoshenko’s KDiamond Suit 6Diamond Suit for two pair. The turn and river came 3Spade Suit and 4Club Suit, and Udon Wannit was eliminated, getting a payday of $1,286,400.

At last year’s final table, a negotiated chop made headlines and caused runner-up Liberace to earn more than eventual winner, Carter “ckingusc” King. This time around, Timoshenko won it outright, picking up the second-largest score of his career with $1,715,200.

To top it off, Timoshenko decided to play in the Monday $1K on Full Tilt and simultaneously won that, as well, banking an additional $75,000.

In addition, Timoshenko picks up crucial Card Player Player of the Year points and now sits atop the leader board, overtaking Eric Baldwin by more than 800 points.
