Online Poker -- OPOY Weekly Recap -- Sep. 25, 2009Steve 'gboro780' Gross Takes Back Lead and WCOOP Main Event Influences Race |
|
Just like in 2008, the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) has completely changed the look of the Card Player Online Player of the Year race.
Steve “gboro780” Gross didn’t have the greatest WCOOP run, but he did take advantage of the inflated fields and prize pools around him, scoring a second-place finish in the $200,000 guarantee with rebuys on Full Tilt. The score earned him 600 points, enough to put him back into first place with 8,284 points.
Second place now belongs to David “Sir Sands” Sands, who made a smaller final table in a WCOOP second-chance event. His sixth-place finish was good for $7,631 and 160 points, but he is still more than 400 points behind Gross.
The two biggest movers in the OPOY rankings belong to the two players who had the best showing at this year’s WCOOP. Thanks to two wins and a final-table appearance in the main event, Daniel “djk123” Kelly jumped all the way to sixth place in the standings. Kelly won event No. 2, event No. 44, and then finished fourth in the main event. Kelly’s combined earnings for the three events totals nearly $950,000, bringing his yearly total to over $1.3 million.
Kelly had a solid month of poker, but it doesn’t compare to ninth-place resident Yevgeniy “Jovial Gent” Timoshenko. The Washington resident had a quiet year online, focusing on live play and even finding success when he won the WPT Championship last April. Then Timoshenko went and won the WCOOP main event for another $1.7 million.
The rest of the top 10 is rounded out by Chris “Moorman1” Moorman (third), Shaun “TedsFishFry” Deeb (fourth), Jeremiah “Believer82” Vinsant (fifth), Jonathan “shipitobv” Delong (seventh), Joe “hoodini10” Udine (eighth), and Nick “GripDsNutz” Grippo (10th).
