If 700 players showed up to play in one of the Deep Stack Extravaganza events this month, could the Venetian accommodate them?
“Absolutely,” answered Kathy Raymond, the director of poker operations for the casino.
The Venetian’s fourth and final Deep Stack series of the year begins today with a $340 tournament at 12 p.m. As has become tradition with the November series, all of the 24 events will be no-limit hold’em. The series culminates with a three-day $2,500 main event that starts on Monday, Nov. 23.
“We expect a very big turnout. We’ve been getting e-mails and requests for information for months for this November Deep Stack,” said Raymond. “We’ve been getting inquiries from all around the country, and outside the country, as well.”
The most common price point for the series is $340, and those tournaments are run almost entirely on weekdays (with the sole exception being tomorrow’s tournament, on Halloween). The series will also feature six $550 weekend events (Nov. 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, and 21) and three $1,070 events on Mondays (on Nov. 2, 9, and 16).
All tournaments start at noon, but players can register for each event the night before starting at 9 p.m.
Raymond said that while it’s difficult to predict, she thought an average of 400-500 players would come out for the smaller events.
“Year after year, we’ve been growing substantially,” said Raymond, who said that the casino would host 74 poker tables for the November series. The room launched nearly four years ago with 39 tables. But the room is now seen by many as one of the preeminent places to play poker on the Strip.
Bringing in additional tables for Deep Stack series has become the norm, but this past year is the first year that the Venetian has kept the additional tables outside the main poker area after the tournament series ended — simply because they were having too difficult a time accommodating players without them.
“We were having problems on our Saturday nights where we would have to limit our entries to our 7 p.m. tournament,” said Raymond. “The last thing we want to do is turn players away, so we met with management and we decided that if we wanted to continue to grow, we needed to accommodate our players, and that’s exactly what we’re going to continue to do.”
There are a couple of things to note about this series –- and the first is, of course, the free food. All poker players –- both tournament players and cash game players — can participate in the daily free buffet held at Orchid, which is adjacent to the poker room. It is running every day of the tournament series, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
For those poker players who have the itch to bet on sports, they can now do so from the comfort of the poker room with the Venetian’s new pocketcasino, a hand-held device that allows players to make real-time sports bets.
Finally, Deep Stack has adjusted its payout structure. Originally, players who min-cashed the events would get just over their buy-in back. Due to player feedback, those who min-cash will now receive nearly double the original buy-in.
