Sunday was a frustrating day of close calls for a few of the Card Player Online Player of the Year candidates. Joe “hoodini10” Udine started the PokerStars Sunday Million in eighth place overall, but a deep run saw him with a chance to leap into second place. Unfortunately, a 13th-place finish meant that Udine was unable to do much damage on the leader board.
Current OPOY leader Steve “gboro780” Gross was already 1,436 points ahead of his nearest competition, but he had a chance to nearly put the race away for good when he final tabled both the Full Tilt $75,000 guaranteed and the PokerStars Sunday 500. His sixth place finish at Full Tilt was solid, but a costly coin flip at PokerStars saw his exit in ninth place. Undoubtedly disappointed, Gross still managed 170 points for the two scores.
Also at the Sunday 500 final table was third place resident Shaun “tedsfishfry” Deeb. After Gross was eliminated, he had a great opportunity to close the gap with a win of his own. Instead, Deeb was taken out in sixth place and only earned 360 points. His finish was enough to pass David “SirSands” Sands and move into second, but he is still a staggering 1,278 points behind Gross.
