Tony HachemThe first event for season two on the PokerStars Australia New Zealand Poker Tour has drawn a field of 236 players and created a prize pool worth $644,280. The first-place finisher will walk away with $165,900. This tops the field from last year (215 players) by 10 percent, and there is $57,330 in additional prize money in this year’s total purse.

Notable professionals who made an appearance at the event included Clonie Gowen, Grant Levy, Eric Assadourian, and Tony Hachem (pictured right). Hachem also received ANZPT season one player of the year honors before the event.

The most interesting hand that took place during the three day-one flights was contested between Matthew Terry and Chris Evans on day 1C. Both players were all in preflop. Their cards:

Terry: JDiamond Suit 10Diamond Suit
Evans: ASpade Suit QSpade Suit

Board: JHeart Suit 10Spade Suit JSpade Suit 6Club Suit KSpade Suit

Terry jumped out to the lead on the flop with a full house, but the KSpade Suit on the river gave Evans a royal flush to win the hand.

The chip leaders heading into day 2 are Roy Hills (118,850), Bruno de Silva (85,275), and Sam Rotar (84,500). A total of 122 players have advanced to day 2. The final table will take place on Sunday, Feb. 14, and Card Player will bring you a recap of the event from the final day after the tournament concludes.
