The PokerStars Australia New Zealand Poker Tour pulled into Auckland for the first time at the weekend and despite a small field of 207 players for the NZ$2,200 buy in main event the competition was fiercely fought and the title stayed on home soil as Geoff Smith was returned the victor.

Smith started the day sixth in chips and in a whirlwind of activity the nine players who started the day table were reduced to four in rapid succession then the remaining players did a deal to take $55,000 each and play for $25,502.

Smith then knocked out Monica Eastick and Pravin Harji to get heads up with Sebastian Martineau with a 3:1 chip lead.

The final hand saw Martineau ahead with two pair on the turn when the chips went into the middle but a paired board on the river thrust Smith’s king kicker into the limelight and lead.

The final table payouts (in NZ dollars) were:
1: Geoff Smith — $80,502
2: Sebastian Martineau — $55,000
3: Pravin Harji — $55,000
4: Monica Eastick — $55,000
5: Jamie Mulligan — $25,875
6: Miroslav Sheynin — $21,735
7: Xiaodong Xia — $17,595
8: Graeme Putt — $13,455
9: Patrick Healy — $10,350
