Pub poker in Northern Ireland gets reined inPolice in Northern Ireland have warned pub poker organisers that they could be breaking the law offering even modest tournament buy-ins and payouts according to U.TV.

Inspector Roy Robinson told the broadcaster he had become aware of events being advertised with £20 buy-ins and quoting prize pools of around £3,000 but warned that, “While it is permissible to have poker nights, events of this size are illegal in Northern Ireland.”

He went on to clarify that the maximum entry fee for events of this type were £3 and prizes should not exceed £300 saying, "All proceeds after expenses must go to charity and the players must be told exactly which charities will benefit.”

Pub poker tournaments have become increasingly popular in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland but laws in Northern Ireland remain strict.
